Design Rationale

Many things happen and decisions are made throughout the design process of a system and it is important to trace them in order to explain why the final product is the way it is.

Design rationale is the information behind that final product.

Not only is it an activity of reflection, but also one of documentation, where all the important decisions, alternatives investigated, and justified arguments or discharged options are included.

For this reason, design rationale is a powerful tool for designers since it can be reused to transfer knowledge from a one situation to another with similar characteristics. More over, this information can be used by different design teams as it captures the context of each situation.
